Plan International UK recently published the ‘State of Girls’ Rights in the UK 2024’ report. The report is informed by the views of adolescent girls, youth activists and focusses on how girls’ rights are being realised in the UK.
The report highlights how girls and young women do not feel safe online or offline with 93% of girls and young women mentioning they do not feel “completely safe in public places.” Only around one in five girls stated that they felt completely safe at school, college or university and only one in 11 girls and young women saying they felt completely safe online.
The report demonstrates how not feeling safe has kept young women and girls from engaging in things that they are passionate about, such as taking part in sport, socialising, hobbies. For some girls, it has even affected their right to engage in work or education. Over half (62%) of girls and young women have avoided doing something due to either experiencing, or feeling worried about public sexual harassment.
The State of Girls’ Rights in the UK report recommends that work needs to be done around engaging men and boys in preventing violence against women and girls. The report also recommends that political leaders must ensure that tackling inequality and ending discrimination are at the heart of government action to ensuring rights of girls in the UK are protected.
