Wales Without Violence Autumn Seminar

The Wales Violence Prevention Unit (VPU) hosted the first Wales Without Violence Seminar on 24 October 2024. The seminar provided an opportunity for partners to learn more about violence trends across Wales. Dr Alex Walker and Shauna Pike, the VPU’s Violence Prevention Outcomes Officers, presented on the violence picture in Wales, using the data from the Wales Violence Monitoring Report, published in September.

The presentation covered the trends in violence across eight different themes:

  1. Interpersonal violence
  2. Violence among children and young people
  3. Violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence
  4. Violence against older people
  5. Night-time economy and alcohol related violence
  6. Organised crime related violence
  7. Violence related to hate crime
  8. Harmful online content.

To learn more about the trends, check out our reports at the Wales Violence Prevention Portal. Click here to register for a Wales Violence Prevention Portal account (please use an organisational email address when registering for the portal).

A demonstration of the Portal was given by Emma Barton, Violence Prevention Outcomes Manager. The demonstration showed attendees how data could be accessed from the Portal and how it can be used to understand the trends of violence in Wales. The Portal holds anonymised data on violence in Wales and allows users to aggregate and present different data sources using a variety of mediums including graphs, charts, tables, reports, and interactive maps of local and national areas. The Portal can improve multi-agency collaboration to prevent violence, by enabling users to access and compare local and national data from multiple sources, including health and police data, to inform operational and strategic decision making.

The seminar also included a case study on how data has been used to inform the VPU’s interventions. This case study was based on the #NotTheOne anti-knife crime campaign and was presented by Daniel Jones, Head of Wales VPU and Bryony Parry, Communications and Engagement Lead. The presentation demonstrated how data from the Portal was used to inform the campaign’s activity and messaging. The presentation showcased the campaign’s suite of resources and how it enhances community engagement to minimise and prevent knife crime among children and young people, making safer community environments- and ultimately, a safer Wales for all. “Good to see that there are plans in place around data improvements … data quality is highly important. To understand where it exists and reporting that in for improvement.”
